Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
