Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
