EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
