Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
