The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to contest certain rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
